1. Manuscripts

References in the text like E159/186 or C1/5 are to manuscripts in the Public Record Office (PRO) at Kew, where most of the manuscripts consulted in this study are held. They are usually referenced with prefix PRO, e.g. PRO E159/186 m 6, where 'm' stands for membrane.
