Crest and heraldic helmet of Sir John II

A stag lodged proper, gorged with a gold ducal or crest coronet
Crest and heraldic helmet of Sir John II

Copied and painted by Henry Gray of Hatfield 2004 from the College of Arms ms I.16/26 of 1598. See also the tabard and gryphon.

Although a brocket can have between 1 and 8 tines on his antlers, those of a heraldic stag 'lodged'—lying down with its head held up—are conventionally thus. 'Proper' means of his natural colour and 'gorged' means around his neck.
